I have been on more red-eye flights than I care to count. I have seen passengers panic at 35,000 feet over a little turbulence. But you know what the real turbulence is? It is when your own heart starts skipping beats or you feel that tightness in your chest climbing a flight of stairs.
I am Herman. Senior flight attendant. Not a doctor, not a cardiologist. But I have looked in the mirror after a long-haul flight and seen a face running on fumes. You do not wait for the engine light to come on before you change the oil.
Today we are talking about the heart. The ticker. The pump. You can have the gut of a teenager, the brain of a chess grandmaster, and the discipline of a Navy SEAL -- but if that pump quits, the flight is over.
Here is what I take to keep the pipes clean and the rhythm steady.
1. Omega-3: The Non-Negotiable
We mentioned Omega-3 in earlier episodes. Here is the heart-specific reason to get serious about dosing.
You want a high EPA/DHA count. Not the cheap stuff that is mostly filler oil. Look for 2,000 to 3,000 milligrams of combined EPA and DHA per day. That is usually about four of the good capsules. This stuff makes your blood slippery -- in a good way. It keeps platelets from clumping up and causing a traffic jam in your coronary arteries.
Dosage: 2 to 3 grams total EPA/DHA with a meal that contains fat. Store it in the fridge so you do not burp up the taste of low tide.
This is the one supplement on this list where I will tell you to start here if you are taking nothing else for your heart. Everything else builds on top of this.
2. CoQ10 / Ubiquinol: The Spark Plug
CoQ10 is the spark plug for the mitochondria -- the little power plants inside your heart cells. Without it, they misfire.
Ubiquinone is fine for younger people. If you are over 60, get Ubiquinol. That is the active, ready-to-use form. Your body's ability to convert regular CoQ10 to Ubiquinol drops off a cliff after 50. Why take the raw material when you can get the finished product?
Critical note: If you are on a statin drug to lower cholesterol, you absolutely need this. Statins deplete CoQ10 like crazy. Doctors prescribe statins constantly and almost never mention this. Now you know.
Dosage: 100 to 200 milligrams of Ubiquinol in the morning with food.
3. Magnesium Taurate: The Rhythm Keeper
We covered Magnesium Glycinate for sleep in earlier episodes. For the heart specifically, consider Magnesium Taurate.
Magnesium calms the electrical system of the heart. Taurine (the amino acid version) supports muscle contraction. Together, they are like a smooth jazz station for your heartbeat instead of heavy metal static. The electrical rhythm of your heart depends on adequate magnesium. Most people are deficient.
Dosage: 400 to 500mg combined elemental magnesium from Taurate or Glycinate. Either form works -- Taurate has the added cardiac benefit.
4. Taurine: The Unsung Hero
Everyone thinks Taurine is just the stuff in energy drinks that gives kids wings. Wrong.
Taurine is an amino acid that your heart muscle loves more than a traveler loves a free upgrade. It improves the heart's ability to contract and relax properly. It helps with blood pressure and fluid balance. It is cheap, it is safe, and it is in every energy drink for a reason -- it actually works. The energy drink companies figured this out before most supplement companies did.
Dosage: 1,000 to 3,000 milligrams (1 to 3 grams) per day. Powder form is cheapest. Tastes slightly bitter. Mix it in water and move on.
5. Vitamin K2 (MK-7): The Calcium Traffic Cop
You are probably taking calcium for bones. Maybe Vitamin D. Good. But here is what no one tells you: without K2, calcium can end up hardening your arteries instead of strengthening your bones.
Vitamin K2 -- specifically the MK-7 form -- acts as a calcium traffic cop. It escorts calcium out of your blood vessels and directs it to your bones where it belongs. This is non-negotiable if you are taking Vitamin D or calcium supplements.
Dosage: 100 to 200 micrograms of MK-7 daily.
Pair it with your D3. They work together. K2 without D3 is doing partial work. D3 without K2 is sending calcium into your arteries.
The Senior Flight Attendant Observation
I have a neighbor. Good guy. About my age. Retired. He kept having this weird tightness in his chest. Not pain -- just tight. He thought it was stress. He thought it was heartburn. He went through a full box of antacids before he got it checked out.
His arteries were working overtime and he was running on fumes. He got serious about his fish oil and his CoQ10. I was not in the doctor's office, and I am not saying supplements fixed him. But he stopped complaining about the tightness. He is back to walking his dog without stopping every block.
The heart does not always scream. Sometimes it just makes you feel tired, or anxious, or a little bit "off." Do not ignore the whispers. Feed the engine before it stalls.
Where to Start
Start with the Omega-3. That is your foundation. Add CoQ10 the following week. Then the Taurine. Then K2. Stack them slowly so you know what is doing what.
- On statins: CoQ10/Ubiquinol is urgent. Start there.
- Taking calcium or D3: Add K2 immediately.
- General heart health: High-dose Omega-3 first, always.
- Noticing irregular rhythm or anxiety: Magnesium Taurate is your entry point.
This episode builds directly on the gut health stack from Episode 4 -- a healthy gut absorbs these supplements properly. Without Episode 4, you are partially wasting these. And everything here connects to the longevity stack in Episode 6, which is where it all comes together.
